Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-In-1

2-In-1 laptops are nothing new. Laptops that convert to tablets either by the screen detaching from the keyboard or simply bending over backward have been around in one form or another since 2002!  But few are as fast or elegant as the new Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-In-1

This latest Dell laptop is built around the new Intel 8th Generation processor, sometimes called the Kaby Lake Refresh line, but all you need to know is that these are the newest, fastest mobile processors, increasing processor speed by up to 40% by using four cores instead of two. Feel free to get your geek on if you wish to know more.

The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-In-1 is under 5 pounds, and that’s with a 15-inch touchscreen, backlit & spill-resistant keyboard, gesture-enabled touchpad, an infrared-capable webcam and a pair of tuned speakers. Our review model came with a 256 GB solid-state drive, and there are a variety of drives available up to 2 TB. The review model had 8 GB of RAM but the Inspiron supports up to 16 GB.

The new Inspiron line includes a variety of ports, including HDMI, USB 3, USB-C, and an SD card reader. There’s no internal optical drive, as is now common with laptops, but there’s an outboard DVD drive available. Battery life is reported to be as long as 8 and one-half hours, but of course, that depends on your component choices and usage. Accessories also include an optional Dell Active Pen for writing or drawing on the screen and a USB-C multiport adapter which allows VGA and HDMI connections as well as cabled Ethernet. Without it, the Inspirons are Wi-Fi and Bluetooth only.

The 2-In-1 design allows you to use the Dell Inspiron in different ways: as a regular keyboard laptop, in a stand or tent mode displaying the screen, or fully flipped over as a Windows 10 Home tablet (the keyboard is automatically disabled).

The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-In-1 is good-looking as well as fast & functional, with an all-aluminum case and very thin bezels around the screen. Our review model had an FHD (1920 x 1080) screen, which was quite good, or you can opt for the even higher res 4K Ultra HD screen (3840 x 2160) and a higher end NVIDIA graphics card.

Did I mention there’s a regular headphone jack?  Apparently, that’s still a thing with laptops even as smartphones seem to abandon them.

The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-In-1 – as reviewed – is currently $879 direct from Dell and there’s a model $30 less, as well as configurations that will cost over $1000. Dell also makes these with 13-inch screens, for less, as well as with 17-inch screens for more. You can see all the possible configurations at the Dell shopping site – choose Products, 2-In-1 Laptops, then Inspiron, and the “new” models to get the ones with the latest & fastest 8th Generation processors.
