Huawei Honor 6X – A Good Phone Any Way You Pronounce It

What Is It? – Not everybody needs an expensive smartphone – by which I mean the ones that cost $600 to $800 – not some of the really expensive ones that can start at $5,000 and go on up depending on animal skin coverings, precious metals, and diamonds added. There are budget phones from many brands, but they may lack some features. Which brings me to the new smartphone from Huawei (which is pronounced Wah-Way or Hwa-Way, not that there’s much difference to those of us not conversant in Cantonese or Mandarin). Either way-way the phone is called the Honor 6X – the latest from this 30-year-old Chinese technology company. This phone has a lot going for it, with 4 GB of RAM, 32 or 64 GB of built-in storage, plus room for 128 GB more on a micro-SD card. There’s a 5.5 inch Full HD display, a well-behaved fingerprint reader on the back, and a dual-lens rear facing camera – one 12 Megapixel lens, the other 2 MP – to allow wide-aperture photos. The “selfie” front-facing camera is 8 MP. The Honor 6X has a long-life battery, a solid-feel metal body that weighs in at 5.7 ounces and can hold 2 SIM cards, something good for travelers. The Honor 6X is sold “unlocked” which means you can use it for any carrier that supports GSM/LTE, which is just about everybody but Verizon and Sprint.

Is It 50+ Friendly? – There’s nothing about the Honor 6X that makes it particularly 50+ friendly, or unfriendly. It has a little more “heft” than some lower priced phones we’ve reviewed, but you’d have to put them on a scale to tell any real difference.

Frustration Factor? – Huawei runs their own EMUI “skin” on top of the regular Android operating system on their phones (and tablets), and it kept asking me for permission for things I didn’t want to give it an OK for. But you can uninstall a lot of pre-loaded apps. It is not the latest Android OS, but is said to be upgradable. The Honor 6X is also only single-band Wi-Fi at a time when even home Wi-Fi systems are dual-band.

Is It Worth It? – The Honor 6X is a good buy. You can pay a little more or a little less for a non-flagship phone, but you won’t go wrong choosing this one. The Huawei Honor 6X with 32 GB is currently $249.99 at Amazon or direct from their store, comes in Silver, Gray or Gold.
